One of the most useful books I have read lately is Confronting Reality : Doing What Matters to Get Things Right, by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan. It presents a clear, concise and usable way of thinking about your business model and the environment in which you operate.
You can no longer count on a return to "normal" competitive conditions. The business world is flat, with capital and knowledge free to move where it gains the best return. Filtered information, selective hearing, wishful thinking, fear and emotional over-investment can all prevent an organization from seeing that flat world clearly.
The book presents a model and process to help leaders recognize where their business stands in external realities and to take action based on that understanding.
