What do you do when the new job isn't what you expected?

Question_mark_2 It's the third Monday in your new job.  You current employer, Acme Training, hired you to open up a new office in Albuquerque - your home town.  Your job is to get the branch profitable by the end of the year.

You know there are plenty of competitors already operating in town.  But during the interview phase, your new boss told you that ten local firms had been literally begging the company to open a branch.  He told you it would be a simple matter of telling these potential clients that you were open for business, and the trainees would come pouring in.

You found a location for the branch, found a great assistant, and opened the office.  You've been interviewing teachers, and are ready to go as soon as those trainees materialize.

The only problem is that your boss seems to have misplaced the list of local firms that wanted the office opened and he can't remember who it was.  You suspect there never were any requests to open an Albuquerque branch.  You haven't got any customers, and no prospect of seeing any soon.  You are a great trainer, and an excellent leader.  But you couldn't sell your way out of a paper bag.

You will be measured by the number of students taught, the number of student-classes sold, and the profit your branch makes.  If you don't get customers, you will fail.  And you don't have the slightest idea how to get customers.

You could quit and work somewhere else, but how would that look on your resume?  You could go back to your old place of work, but that doesn't feel right either.  But this role seems like a no-win situation.

What do you do?
